About Combat Patrols

Combat Patrols are Games Workshop's 1,000-point themed starter boxes for Warhammer 40,000 — one per major faction, each bundling a Warlord, 1–2 troop squads, an elite unit and a vehicle or monster. They are the standard entry point into a new 40K faction and the most-traded boxed set on the second-hand market.

Buying advice for second-hand collectors

Sealed Combat Patrols routinely sell for 25–35% off RRP second-hand. Opened/built Combat Patrols sell for 40–55% off RRP, often with the box and instructions intact. Check the listing for the rules booklet (current edition Combat Patrol mini-rulebook) and unit cards. Older Combat Patrols (pre-10th edition) remain playable but use legacy unit selections.

Collecting & army-building advice

A Combat Patrol is a complete 500–1,000-point army on its own and can play the new Combat Patrol game mode out of the box. Most collectors use them as a 'starter spine' then expand with second-hand troop blocks, a centrepiece monster and a character or two. Cross-faction collectors love them because each box is small enough to paint to completion.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Combat Patrol enough to play 40K?
Yes — Combat Patrols include all models, bases and rules needed to play the dedicated Combat Patrol game mode. For matched play (1,000–2,000 points), you'll expand with extra units.
Are second-hand Combat Patrols a good deal?
Yes — they're consistently the cheapest path into a faction. Sealed boxes save 25–35% off RRP; opened boxes can save 40–55%.
Are older Combat Patrols still legal?
Yes — every unit in current Combat Patrols has a current warscroll. Some Combat Patrols (like the original Necrons or Tyranids) have been refreshed with new unit selections.
