Astra Militarum faction overview

The Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) is humanity's massed regimental army — billions of soldiers backed by Leman Russ tanks, Baneblade super-heavies, artillery and aircraft. The range spans Cadian Shock Troops, Death Korps of Krieg, Catachan Jungle Fighters, and dozens of named characters and regimental specialists.

Buying advice for second-hand collectors

Guard is the deepest second-hand market in 40K — Cadians, Catachans, and the Forge World Death Korps of Krieg (now plastic) all have huge supply. Look for OOP metal regiments (Vostroyans, Tallarn, Mordians) for character. Leman Russ tanks and Baneblades regularly appear in collection clear-outs at 30–50% off RRP.

Collecting & army-building advice

Regimental identity drives everything — pick Cadian, Catachan, Krieg, Tempestus Scions, or a custom regiment before buying. Batch-paint infantry in 20s using contrast paints. Most 2,000-point lists run 60–80 infantry, 2–4 tanks, 2 artillery pieces and a command squad.

Frequently asked questions

Are old metal Imperial Guard regiments still legal?
Yes — all metal regiments (Vostroyans, Tallarn, Mordians, Valhallans) use Cadian Shock Troops or Catachan Jungle Fighter warscrolls in the current codex.
How big is a typical Guard army?
60–100 infantry plus 2–6 vehicles is typical at 2,000 points. Themed armoured companies use far fewer infantry.
What's the cheapest Guard tank second-hand?
Leman Russ Battle Tanks routinely appear in collection clear-outs at £25–35, often built but unpainted, for a current RRP of £55.
