Death Guard faction overview

The Death Guard are the plague-ridden Traitor Marines of Nurgle, led by the Daemon Primarch Mortarion. The range is one of 40K's most visually consistent — bloated Plague Marines, swarming Pox Walkers, Foetid Bloat-drones, Plagueburst Crawlers and the Daemon Engines of the Plague Planet.

Buying advice for second-hand collectors

Death Guard kits have been stable since 2017 and second-hand supply is healthy. The Dark Imperium split-box Death Guard half remains the cheapest entry. Watch for missing Plague Marine special weapons (blight launchers, plague spewers) in loose lots. Mortarion is the obvious second-hand flagship.

Collecting & army-building advice

Rust, verdigris and slime effects define the paint scheme — Typhus Corrosion, Nihilakh Oxide and Blood for the Blood God technical paints are essentials. Most lists run 2–3 squads of Plague Marines, a Bloat-drone or two, a Plagueburst Crawler and either Typhus or Mortarion as the warlord.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dark Imperium Death Guard half a good starter?
Yes — it's the cheapest way to get Plague Marines, Pox Walkers, Foetid Bloat-drones and a Lord of Contagion in one purchase.
Are Death Guard a beginner-friendly Chaos faction?
Yes — they're durable, low model count, and the paint scheme is forgiving (rust and slime hide mistakes).
Can I use generic Chaos Space Marines as Death Guard?
Aesthetically yes, but rules-wise Death Guard have a separate codex and use Plague Marine-specific warscrolls.
