Horus Heresy overview

Horus Heresy (the Age of Darkness) is Games Workshop's 30K setting, depicting the galactic civil war 10,000 years before 40K. Armies are built around Space Marine Legions in MkII–MkVI power armour, Solar Auxilia, Mechanicum, and Imperialis Militia, with rules currently in 2nd edition.

Buying advice for second-hand collectors

Heresy collectors care deeply about armour mark consistency and Legion-specific upgrade sprues. The Age of Darkness 2.0 boxed set is the cheapest entry point — split halves of MkVI Tacticals, Contemptors and Spartan Tanks frequently appear on marketplaces. Older Forge World resin can have warping and bubble issues; ask for clear photos.

Collecting & army-building advice

Pick a Legion early and stick with it — most veterans build 3,000-point Legion forces over years. Mix plastic MkIII/MkVI Tactical Squads with Forge World resin characters and tanks. Many collectors paint a small Solar Auxilia or Mechanicum allied detachment to break visual monotony.

Frequently asked questions

Is 30K compatible with 40K?
Models are cross-compatible visually, but rules are not — Horus Heresy 2.0 uses its own ruleset. Many 40K Marines work as Heresy Legionaries with minor armour-mark adjustments.
Are old Forge World resin kits worth buying second-hand?
Yes, but inspect for warping, miscasts and air bubbles. Many older Forge World kits are now OOP entirely, making second-hand the only source.
What's the cheapest plastic Legion start?
Split halves of the Age of Darkness box, supplemented with MkVI Tactical Squad and Contemptor singles, build a 1,500-point Legion for well under retail.
