The Old World overview
The Old World is Games Workshop's relaunched Warhammer Fantasy game, returning to the pre-End Times setting. Armies use rank-and-file regiments on square bases — Empire, Bretonnia, Tomb Kings, Orcs & Goblins, Dwarfs, High/Wood/Dark Elves and more. Many old Fantasy kits remain legal and dominate the second-hand market.
Buying advice for second-hand collectors
Vintage Warhammer Fantasy models (5th–8th edition) are highly compatible with The Old World, but rebasing from round/cavalry bases back to squares is common. Watch eBay for sealed metal blister characters and OOP regiment boxes — Bretonnian Knights of the Realm and Tomb Kings infantry have spiked since the relaunch.
Collecting & army-building advice
Old World armies are rank-and-file: count on 60–120 infantry, 10–20 cavalry and a handful of war machines and characters per 2,000-point army. Movement trays are essential. Painting is a long-term commitment — many veterans batch-paint regiments of 20 in a single sitting using contrast paints over zenithal primer.

Frequently asked questions
- Do old Warhammer Fantasy kits work in The Old World?
- Most do — the relaunch deliberately uses returning kits and re-cast metals/resins. Check the current Arcane Journal and army book for unit availability before buying.
- Square or round bases for The Old World?
- Square. Round-based AoS conversions of Fantasy models need rebasing for matched play.
- Which Old World armies are most affordable second-hand?
- Empire and Orcs & Goblins — both have huge legacy ranges with abundant supply. Bretonnia and Tomb Kings command premiums after the relaunch revived interest.
