Tyranids faction overview
The Tyranids are the Great Devourer — an extragalactic swarm of bioweapons consuming entire star systems. Their range covers chittering Termagant and Hormagaunt swarms, towering Carnifexes and Hive Tyrants, and apex Norn Emissary and Tervigon monsters. Leviathan made the current range one of 40K's most modern and visually consistent.
Buying advice for second-hand collectors
Tyranid Leviathan box splits dominate the second-hand Tyranid market — Termagants, Barbgaunts, Psychophages and Tyranid Warriors all routinely sell for a fraction of new sprue prices. Older metal Zoanthropes and Genestealer Cults variants are not cross-legal. Check Carnifex and Trygon completeness carefully.
Collecting & army-building advice
Tyranid armies are big — plan on 60–100 small Gants, plus a few mid-sized synapse units and 1–2 monsters. Speedpaint and contrast paints over a coloured zenithal are the standard tabletop solution. Choose a hive fleet colour identity early: Leviathan purple/cream, Behemoth red/bone, Kraken blue/white are popular.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Leviathan still the best Tyranid second-hand entry?
- Yes — splits of the Leviathan Tyranid half regularly appear at 30–50% below sprue prices and give a solid 1,000-point Tyranid core.
- Are old Tyranid sculpts (Carnifex, Hive Tyrant) still legal?
- Yes, the original plastic Carnifex and Hive Tyrant remain legal. Some metal-era Zoanthropes and Lictors have been replaced by current plastics.
- How many Termagants do I really need?
- Most competitive lists use one to three units of 20. Casual swarm-themed armies often field 60–80 Gants total.
